The United States ambassador visited Kosmos

The visit was initiatively organized by the embassy and the inviter and the host was the mayor of Kemi, Tero Nissanen. The ambassador is interested in the development view of the area and the program of the day was planned according his interest. Shawn Waddoups the Political and Economic Counsellor in the Finland United States embassy travelled together with Charles C. Adams to Sea Lapland.

At the Lapland UAS the guests were welcomed by the vice rector Reijo Tolppi and Hannu Kähkölä the acting dean of the school of natural resources and engineering. The ambassador is well aware of the changes happening in Finnish and European universities. One of the conversation topics were tuition fees which the Finnish Universities begin to collect from foreign students outside of EU. The discussion continued to alumni’s and university fund-raisings. In further the discussion went on to the future of Lapland’s demographics and Lapland UAS investment on online teaching and development of the curriculums.

When visiting one of the electrical engineering laboratories the ambassador Adams discussed with the engineering students about their studies and their future plans. The ambassador wanted to remind the students about the privilege of gaining the high-level Finnish education, which is highly appreciated and admired world-wide, also in the United States. The Finnish personality traits: modesty and politeness are fine qualities according to the ambassador but at the same time he encouraged the students to market their knowledge and the Finnish product development in which they are being part in the future.
