north2north study exchange

Lapland UAS is a member in UArctic University, which study exchange program is called North2North. UArctic University is network which includes northern universities and institutes. The aim of the North2North -program is support northern mutual knowledge and awareness, and also high-quality education in northern areas, with study exchange.

Lapland UAS' students can apply for N2N -exchange to partner universities, which are located in the Nordic countries, Canada, USA and some other European countries. Students have the possibility of applying the North2North grant and Lapland UAS travel grant and Lapland UAS study exchange grant (if n2n grant is not available). We have 1-3 places in Lapland UAS for N2N -exchange per year. N2N exchange program is for all Lapland UAS students. Notice that all your courses must be accepted fully to your degree. Due to limited number of exchange places, student must be committed to exchange and plan it with care. After the acceptance you can only cancel your exchange for a very serious reason.

Who can apply?

All Lapland UAS' Degree Program students hava the possibility to apply N2N exchange. You can apply for one semester at a time. The duration of the study period must be at least 3 months and accumulate 5 ECTS / month.

Lapland UAS has a selection criteria for North2North exchange, which follows the north2north programme general selection criteria.

Criteria:

1. Studies are emphasized by northernness or students has completed northern studies (Transcript of Records).
2. Student shows a significant impact on the northern region (Letter of Motivation/Motivation Letter).
3. Student is from the northern region or small locality in the North.
4. Student is committed to influence own northern residential community and northern region.
5. Student has previous work experience or voluntary related to the North.
6. The number of credits (Transcript of Records).
7. Academic success (Average of completed studies).

Notice that the selection criteria above is not order of importance. All criteria affects to the selection in its entirety.

Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) will inform participating universities study places and grants latest on 30.11.
All applications are ranked to the ranking list and after that Internationalisation Services decides who are chosen and notifies forward to EDUFI.

Grants

Possibility of applying North2North -grant, which is 1500-2000€, and also Lapland UAS travel grant, which is 450-1000€.

If you do not receive funding through N2N -program, you can apply Lapland UAS study exchange grant 300€/month.

 

Please note that the grants will not cover all the expenses of the exchange – it is very likely that during the exchange student will have to use their own savings as well!

If you have a Finnish citizenship or permanent residence permit (status A) and you are eligible to get KELA grants, please contact KELA for more information concerning the grants for studying abroad.

Application period

You can apply for N2N -program once a year. Application period for autumn and spring semester is 1.1 - 15.2.

Start planning the exchange well in advance. Familiarize yourself to exchange destinations first. After that contact to Internationalisation Services (outgoing@lapinamk.fi) and discuss about the possible exchange destination. They will help you with application process, application period and required forms. Return all of the documents to Internationalisation Services. They will contact to destination university.

Before the exchange

Application

  1. Be prepared for a long application process and to fill out multiple forms. Notice that the acceptance for exchange cannot be guaranteed.

  2. Book time for a guidance meeting with Internationalisation Services (outgoing@lapinamk.fi). 

  3. Check the exchange university’s courses with the study councellor.

    Prepare all the needed application documents and download them to your SoleMOVE application:

    1. Official English Transcript of Records from Peppi

    2. Motivation Letter

    3. CV

    4. Pre-filled Learning agreement

    5. To be noticed during a mobility period

Acceptance

  1. All applications are ranked to a ranking list and Internationalisation Services notifies the application situation to EDUFI.

  2. EDUFI will inform each university to which partner universities they have received a study place. The decision is informed to each applicant individually and the selected students are nominated to the partner university.

  3. Exchange university will contact you and send you the application instructions. Student will make the application.

  4. The host university will send you the Letter of Acceptance

  5. Finalize your pre-filled Learning agreement with your study councellor. The Learning agreement is signed by the study councellor and internationalisation services. Be prepared that not all the courses you have selected in the Learning agreement will be arrenged and there will most likely be changes in the courses.

  6. Apply for the N2N grant and also Lapland UAS Travel Grant in SoleGRANT programme with one application. You will need the acceptance letter and the Learning agreement signed by all three parties. Remember IBAN!

  7. Familiarize yourself with the Check List for student exchange and the exchange destination and prepare yourself well for the trip! 

  8. Preoare yourself that the application process is long and it can take a long time to get the acceptance from the partner university.

During Exchange

  • Usually students make small changes to their studies. Always discuss with the study councellor about the possible changes to make sure that they are applicable for your studies.

  • Changing your study plans requires ALWAYS a document Changes to the original learning agreement, non-EU. For this document remember to have the signatures from the exchange university and scan it to Internationalisation Services (outgoing@lapinamk.fi).

  • Read your Lapland UAS email! All communication from home university takes place through Lapland UAS’ email!

  • Contact the Internationalisation Services if you face problematic situations during your exchange. We like to have posts also from good experiences!

  • Exchange must not be discontinued or terminated earlier without discussing the matter with the Internationalisation Services. Cancellation or termination of the exchange

  • Before leaving ask the host institution for a signed Letter of Confirmation (Recognition Outcomes - The Receiving Institution form page 1).

After Exchange

  1. Fill the electrical N2N Post Exchange Feedback Form.

  2. In SoleMOVE fill out the After exchange interleaf and Feedback interleaf and also return the Letter of Confirmation SoleMOVE.

  3. Host university sends the Transcript of Records to Lapland UAS’ Internationalisation Services. Internationalisation Services informs when you can pick up the transcript of records and start the credit transfer process. If you receive it personally, you must download the Transcript of Records to SoleMOVE.

  4. Start the credit transfer process: 
    1. Contact your study councellor and start the credit transfer process electronically in Peppi.
    2. After international studies has been accepted in Peppi and you can see your credits done abroad in there, download your Transcript of Records through Peppi.    
    3. Upload your Transcript of Records -form to After exchange interleaf in SoleMOVE.
