magellan study exchange

Magellan Study Exchange is an international cooperation network, which includes universities from Europe, United States of America and Asia. Lapland UAS' students can apply exchange period to USA, South Korea or Costa Rica. We have 5-10 places in Lapland UAS for Magellan -exchange per year. Magellan exchange program is for all Lapland UAS students. Notice that all your courses must be accepted fully to your degree. Due to limited number of exchange places, student must be committed to exchange and plan it with care. After the acceptance you can only cancel your exchange for a very serious reason.

Who can apply?

All Lapland UAS' Degree Programme students has a possibility to apply for a Magellan exchange, if they can find suitable courses from the destination university. Please note that all the study programmes of the universities are not automatically available for exchange students. Please contact the internationalisation services, if you are interested in the Magellan exchange. Internationalisation services will check from the partner university on the availability of the particular study programme and courses.

You can mainly apply for a one semester at a time. The duration of the study period must be at least 3 months and accumulate at least 5 ECTS / month.

Fine Arts students can also apply for Magellan exchange, if there is enough suitable courses.

Grants

Possibility to apply for a Lapland UAS study exchange and a travel grant.  

Please note that the grants will not cover all the expenses of the exchange – it is very likely that during the exchange student will have to use their own savings as well! If you have a Finnish citizenship or permanent residence permit (status A) and you are eligible to get KELA grants, please contact KELA for more information concerning the grants for studying abroad.

Application process

Before the exchange

  1. Start planning your exchange well in advance. Familiarize to the exchange destinations. More information about Magellan exchange destination you can find here. (Students -> Explore -> Semester/Year Programmes)

  2. Be prepared for a long application process and to fill out multiple forms. Notice that the acceptance for exchange cannot be guaranteed.

  3. Book time for guidance for Internationalisation Services. They will help you with the exchange process, forms and time table.

  4. Make your SoleMOVE application and select more than one option for exchange destination (all 3 options). Choose only partner universities where are studies for your degree. Notice that Online Courses are not included Magellan agreement. If you want to participate to Online Courses, you have to pay the course fees.

  5. Fill the Magellan electrical application form here (Login -> New -> User). Choose all your destination options to the application form. Ask the required appendices, signatures and deliver the forms and documents to the Internationalisation Services for review.

    Needed documents are:

    1. Official English Transcript of Records from Peppi

    2. Certification of Language Proficiency (ask more from your English language teacher, you can find form here.)  

  6. Exchange university will contact to Lapland UAS' Internationalisation Services about the applications.

  7. The selection criteria, which affects to the choice are for example; academic success (average of completed studies), the number of credits (Transcript of Records), sufficient English language (Certificate of Language Proficiency), motivation (Essay -interleaf in the Magellan application form).

  8. After the selection destination university will contact you and ask you some documents more, for example Financial Statement Form etc. After that they will send you the Letter of Acceptance for Visa. (DS-2019- or I-20 form, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status or Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status)

  9. Send copy of Letter of Acceptance to the Internationalisation Services.

  10. Check the exchange university’s courses with the Study councellor/Internationalisation Services. Write a Learning Agreement (LA). LA will be signed by the Study councellor.

  11. Apply for the Lapland UAS Travel Grant in SoleGRANT programme.

  12. Apply for Visa immediately after you have received the Letter of Acceptance. More information about Visa you can get an authoritative of destination country. Contact to Finnish Mission in destination country.

  13. Be prepared of different kind of additional fees. You may have to pay for example Visa fee (more information here), Health Insurance, and other registration fees. Lapland UAS pay Magellan Application fee on behalf of the student.

  14. Familiarize yourself with the Exchange Student’s Check List and the exchange destination and prepare yourself well for the trip! 

During Exchange

  • Usually students make small changes to their studies. Always discuss with the study councellor about the possible changes to make sure that they are applicable for your studies.

  • Changing your study plans requires ALWAYS a document Changes to the original learning agreement, non-EU. For this document remember to have the signatures from the exchange university and scan it to Internationalisation Services (international@lapinamk.fi).

  • Read your Lapland UAS email! All communication from home university takes place through Lapland UAS’ email!

  • Contact the Internationalisation Services if you face problematic situations during your exchange.

  • Exchange must not be discontinued or terminated earlier without discussing the matter with the Internationalisation Services.  

After Exchange

  1. Before leaving ask the host institution for a signed Letter of Confirmation (Recognition Outcomes - The Receiving Institution form page 1).
  2. In SoleMOVE fill out the After exchange interleaf and Feedback interleaf and also return the Letter of Confirmation SoleMOVE.

  3. Host university sends the Transcript of Records to Lapland UAS’ Internationalisation Services. Internationalisation Services informs when you can pick up the transcript of records and start the credit transfer process. If you receive it personally, you must download the Transcript of Records to SoleMOVE.

  4. Start the credit transfer process: 
    1. Contact your study councellor and start the credit transfer process electronically in Peppi.
    2. After international studies has been accepted in Peppi and you can see your credits done abroad in there, download your Transcript of Records through Peppi.    
    3. Upload your Transcript of Records -form to After exchange interleaf in SoleMOVE.
