Lapland UAS Sports Lab

Lapland UAS (in Finnish: Lapin AMK) Sports Lab is part of a larger sports and exercise competence center in Ounasvaara, Rovaniemi.

The Sports Lab is a learning, testing, and R&D environment for physical education, sports, wellness, rehabilitation, and coaching. It is primarily a learning and training environment for our physical education students, but it also serves as a versatile environment for other students, both nationally and internationally.

Sports Lab has modern equipment and software for physical education, sports, coaching, and rehabilitation needs. The equipment and software provide a better understanding of human holistic performance: physiology, biomechanics, physical performance, and perceptual-motor skills.

The equipment and software can be used in various ways, such as teaching, testing, measuring, training, coaching, and research, development, and innovation activities. Most of the equipment is portable, so it can be used outside the laboratory as well.

Sports Lab is located at Santa Sport Centre of Well-being and Sports and is part of the Olympic Training Center (OTC). Terveystalo Rovaniemi Liikuntaklinikka and Comeback Center Oy also utilize the space as a rehabilitation environment. Our experts operate in national and international developer networks for sports and physical education.

In Sports Lab, we

Analyze walking and running.

Practice perceptual-motor skills, walking and running techniques, speed, reaction, and balance.

Measure

   physiological factors
   physical stress
   balance
   perceptual-motor skills
   cognitive and neurophysiological functions
power and power output, and asymmetries.

Perform game and motion analysis, and

Conduct research, development, and innovation activities.

Equipment and software available

The following equipment and software are available at Sports Lab:

BlazePod reaction lights: Suitable for practicing and testing reaction and speed characteristics.

Dartfish software: Used for data and motion analysis.

Delsys Trigno: A wireless EMG device used to measure muscle electrical activity.

Desmotec, D. Full: Used to measure power and force production in different squat variations dynamically and isometrically. The device’s power and force measurements are based on the principles of isoinertial force in dynamic tests. The device can also measure asymmetries. It is suitable for both training and testing.
Desmotec, E. Board: Used to perform various isometric tests, balance exercises and tests, as well as various jump exercises and tests. The device is suitable for both training and testing.
Desmotec, V. Full: Used to measure versatile power and force production of the lower and upper body dynamically and isometrically. The device’s power and force measurements are based on the principles of isoinertial force in dynamic tests. The device can also measure asymmetries. It is suitable for both training and testing.
Desmotec, V. Mini Flywheel: Suitable for strength, speed, and agility training, warm-up, and injury prevention. The device’s operation is based on the principles of isoinertial force. It is suitable for training.

Ergoline 100 K bicycle ergometer (PP ergometer): Enables various bicycle tests. PP ergometer can also be combined with blood pressure and oxygen saturation measurements.

GoPro cameras: Used to record motion and sports performances.

Heittoportti: Used to test upper body speed force characteristics.

Insta360 camera system: Used to record motion and sports performances.

Lactate Plus lactate meter: Used to measure a person’s blood lactate levels from their fingertip.

Motek Grail + Vicon motion analysis cameras: Used to perform accurate walking and running analysis. The analysis provides information on the biomechanics, technique, and force production of different phases of walking or running. The device can also be used to practice and test perceptual-motor skills, balance, cognitive and neurophysiological functions. Additionally, the Vicon motion analysis system can be used to perform various motion analyses.

Movesense: A wireless sensor used to measure EKG, heart rate, and motion.

Newtest contact mat: Used to perform various jump tests.

Oculus Meta Quest 2: Used to immerse oneself in virtual reality. VR glasses can be used for gaming or various simulations. Thanks to the built-in sensor, the controller transfers movements to the digital reality.

Polar heart rate and activity monitors: Used to measure heart rate, activity, and calorie consumption.

Polar Team Pro: Used to perform team and group measurements. The device, software, and sensors provide information on, among other things, people’s heart rates, distance traveled, average speed, and speed ranges.

Saehan grip strength meter: Used to measure hand grip strength.
Saehan body fat calipers: Used to measure body fat percentage.

Smart EquiTest: A comprehensive system for practicing and testing balance and motor functions.

Tobii Pro 3 glasses: Used to perform eye movement research. The glasses can be used to investigate where the gaze is directed and focused in different exercise, sports, or coaching situations.

Senaptec Strobe glasses: Used to train visual perception and brain function in exercise and sports performances, especially in skill training. The exercises aim to improve a person’s concentration, timing, visual performance, and balance.

Witty SEM by Microgate reaction light system: Used to practice and measure a person’s agility, coordination, reaction, speed, and perceptual-motor skills.
