Enrolment as a non-attending student

If you have started your studies before 1 August 2015, you have the right to enrol yourself as a non-attending student for no more than two academic years (four terms). You do not need to provide a reason for your absence. The absence does not consume your right-to-study time.

If you accept a study place and start your studies after 1 August 2015, you have the right to enrol yourself as a non-attending student after accepting the study place during the first year of studies only if

  • you are carrying out a service in accordance with the Conscription Act, Non-Military Service Act or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service
  • you are on maternity, paternity or parental leave
  • you are unable to start your studies due to your own illness or injury.

The above-mentioned reasons do not consume your right-to-study time. You must be able to prove the reason for your absence if requested. You can enrol as a non-attending student for a maximum of one academic year.

If you are absent during the first year of studies due to military service, non-military service or women’s voluntary military service, or if you are on maternity, paternity or parental leave, you have the right to enrol as a non-attending student for another academic year (two terms) after the first academic year for any reason during the remainder of your studies (this absence does not consume your right-to-study time).

If you have been absent for the first year of studies due to your own illness or injury, you cannot enrol as a non-attending student again. All absences taking place in the following academic years will consume your right-to-study time.

If you accept a study place and start you studies after 1 August 2015 and if you are present for the first academic year, you have the right to enrol as a non-attending student for one academic year (two terms) for any reason during the remainder of your studies.

During your absence, you do not have the right to complete studies or to have attainments entered to the academic records. You are not entitled to the student financial aid, meal support or any other student benefits (incl. travel discounts). If you enrol as a non-attending student, remember to cancel your student financial aid in the online service of Kela www.kela.fi/asiointi.

As a non-attending student you must take care of enrolment to the following year according to schedule. When you return after an absence to continue your studies, review your personal study plan (hops) and follow the study plan in force at that time. It may have changed during your absence.
